Opening Workshop

 

 

Introduction

On 21 January 2004 the opening workshop for the Guyana Sea Defences ICB-SZMS project was held in the auditorium on the top floor of the office building of the Delegation of the European Commission in Georgetown.

Full Session

The morning workshop started with opening addresses by the Mr. George Howard (Chief Sea and River Defence Officer), Ms. Helena Laakso (Economic Advisor to the Delegation of the European Commission) and Mr. Constantin Stere (Consultant's Team Leader).

This was followed by an introduction to the project by Mr Frank Wiersma (Consultant's Deputy Team Leader) and the presentation of the project Logo and Website by Mr. Mewburn Amsterdam (Project Leader from Guyana Sea Defences).

Subsequently, Mr. Henry Opdam presented the comprehensive Training Programme, including the objectives and the Learning-by-Doing approach.


The workshop was opened by Mr. George Howard the Chief Sea and River Defence Officer, on behalf of the Minister of Public Works.

An overview of the project was presented by Mr. Frank Wiersma, Deputy Team Leader of the Consultant.

 

 
The comprehensive Training Programme was presented by Mr. Henry Opdam, the Training Co-ordinator.

Sub-Sessions
The workshop continued in 5 subsession according to the modules of the Training Programme:

  1. Survey, in combination with
  2. Data Processing
  3. Modelling
  4. Sea Defence Structures
  5. Mangrove Management
  6. Strategy and Master Plan.

The successful workshop was concluded with a presentation by each of these groups on their findings with respect to the 2 main questions:

  • What are the key issues to be addressed in this training module, with an eye on developing a first outline for a Strategy and Master Plan for managing the Sea Defences?
  • What organisations and persons should participate in this training module?
