Between the 12th and 20th April 2004, a team of eight Guyanese from the Guyana
Sea Defence Board and the Strategy and Master Plan Module 6 went on a well
planned and executed study tour of Integrated Coastal Zone and Sea Defence
Management in the Netherlands, courtesy of Royal Haskoning, consultants to the
ongoing Shore Zone Management Project of the Ministry of Public Works and
Communications.
The experience and knowledge gained over the period seemed to have been built up
cumulatively, as each organisation provided some information and insight into
the next round of visiting experiences, in addition to cementing some
information and knowledge gained from the previous location visited.
After a welcome and introduction at the Head Office of Royal Haskoning in
Nijmegen, participants had lectures and tours at each of the following
institutions and organisations:
- The International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation, (ITC), where one of the team was once a student;
- Royal Boskalis Westminster NV, well known in Guyana,
- Water Board Rijnland and a pumping station;
- Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management of the
Netherlands, Rijkswaterstaat;
- WL/Delft Hydraulics, whose expertise will be used to develop computer
models as part of the present project;
- UNESCO/IHE Delft, where one of the team was once a student, and;
- TU Delft CICAT, the Technical University of Delft.
Participants used their limited spare time to visit the local market in Den
Haag and the sea defence dykes and Storm Surge Barrier along the coast, only
passing through Amsterdam on the way to the airport, thus being unable to view
any of the famous or infamous sights of Amsterdam such as the tulips and the Red
Light district.
