Mangrove Management Team (26 March 2004)

Introduction on sub-modules 
Training module 5, Mangrove Management, aims at understanding the role and function of mangrove in the sea defence system of Guyana. During the Kick-Off Workshop held on 5 February 2004 at Guyana Sea Defences at Water Street in Georgetown four main subjects (sub-modules = SM's) have been defined  by the trainees:

  1. Characteristics of mangrove vegetation in Guyana (SM1) ............finished;
  2. Adverse Impacts (SM2) .............................................................finished;
  3. Requirements for optimal mangrove development (SM3) .............finished;
  4. Mangrove Management Plan (SM4).................almost finished.

During the last two years the following persons were active in the Mangrove Management Team:

Workshops
The Mangrove Management Team meets each other every two weeks during a workshop at Guyana Sea Defences or Guyana Forestry Commission. Next to that, the team meets in smaller groups at different organisations to discuss different items.

What have we done?

Some of the things we have done:
 -  Final Work Plan on Mangrove Management (17 March 2004) (pdf, 416kB)
 -  Fieldwork to several locations (see below)
 -  Data Collection Sheet which will be added to the GIS Database (see Module 2)
     and will be  used for the field work (see below)
 -  Equipment Training (GPS, water Quality kit etc)
 -  Writing articles
 -  Presentations during Steering Committee meetings
 -  Reports for the sub-modules 1, 2, 3 and 4.
 -  Newsletter on Mangroves (.pdf)

Field work
The team has been carried out field measurements based on a detailed Field Data Sheet that was prepared.
 -  Harlem and Windsor Forest (26 March 2004)
 -  Ruimzigt, West Coast Demerara (19 May 2004)
 -  Le Destin, East Coast Essequibo (19 May 2004)

What to do next?
After finishing the sub-modules 1, 2 and 3 (congratulations!!) the team worked on Sub-Module 4, the Mangrove Management Plan. Issues in the Mangrove Management Plan are:

  1. Sustainable use of forest resources (including a Code of Practice and Public Awareness raising)
  2. Restoration of mangroves (Including Restoration of Environmental Conditions, Creation of suitable conditions for mangrove development (i.e. sea defence structures) and Mangrove Planting) 
  3. Monitoring programme
  4. Institutional Requirements
  5. Cost and Funding of the Management Programme

The reports of sub-module 1, 2 and 3 are completed!!
The Mangrove Management Team have been completed the report of the first three sub-modules. Congratulations!!
