GIS-Training at Guyana Sea Defences

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools have since long been praised as very
useful
(regarding topics such as urban planning, resources management, and hazard and
risk assessment)
due, among other reasons, to their data integration flexibility, strong data
analysis, processing and
visualization capabilities allowing “rapid” and efficient generation of
information, which could be
used to support decision-making process. However, the strong emphasis put on the
tools
(software-hardware) makes it easier to very often lose sight of the complex
planning process
behind a successfully implemented GIS. No matter how well suited a software
package is or how
powerful a processor can be, their actual suitability to meet the needs of a
specific project is
solely defined throughout a careful planning process and definition of the
information needs.
During the GIS training the participants are working on the following topics:
- Planning for a GIS, answering questions such as:
What do we need a GIS for?
How would the use of a GIS system improve the overall performance of the
project?
What type of information should be delivered by the GIS?
What are our data requirements?
- Setting up the GIS database: introduction to conceptual and physical
design
- Data analysis and processing: from source data to processed data
(spatial and non spatial operations)
- Data integration
The main goal of the training is to emphasise the importance of an elaborate
planning process
as the key to a successful implementation of a GIS.
The second objective of the training is to further develop specific GIS
“hands-on experience”
of the workshop participants.
