GIS-Training at Guyana Sea Defences
by Koert Sijmons

  During the Training the participants were given an introduction in the visualization aspects in a GIS environment, especially in the cartographic concepts and representation of GIS data. This was done with a PowerPoint representation. Also, the participants got an introduction in the functionalities of the Cartographic software “ACE (Advanced Cartographic Environment) from PCIGeomatics, Canada.

Two exercises were given to the participants.

In the first exercise, participants had to design the symbolization for all topographic features and a complete map lay-out including: grid, title, scale bar, legend, logo and north arrow. Several software functionalities were used, such as:
- Attribute tools for attribute editing;
- Line editing tools for editing lines, such as "cutting lines, extending lines";
- Polygon editing, such as: connecting line segments into a polygon;
- Polygon in polygon editing;
- Symbol editor, for the creation of individual symbols;
- Color selection on the hand of the ITC color-chart;
- Text placement for straight and bended text along rivers.
The final result was a map fragment of a Topographic map at scale 1:750,000.

The aim of the second exercise was to recognize and to identify terrain features in an Orthophoto image.
Their task was:
- To create a list of identifiable terrain features;
- To create layers for each individual terrain feature;
- To create a line and color symbol table;
- Digitize all identifiable terrain features from the Orthophoto image;
- To create map-lay-out etc.
The final result was a print of the map.
