First Workshop
The GIS and Data Processing Module kicked off with a Workshop at 25th April
2004. A group of 15 enthusiastic participants from many different institutes
contributed to a brainstorm session. Together it was determined what needs to be
learned and achieved in the GIS and Data Field. All ideas were clustered in 3
main groups:
- Sub-Module 2-1:
Basic GIS and IT Knowledge --> Concentrating mostly on hands on
training and theoretic background
- Sub-Module
2-2: Data Collection and Processing --> Concentrating mainly on fieldwork,
data from other modules into GIS ready format
- Sub-Module 2-3:
Application and Database development --> Concentrating mainly on the use of
all the data and the development of GIS tools and databases
The teammembers of Module 2 are:

IT
and GIS Training
Over the course of last months several training workshops were given to the
Module 2 Team:
- GIS Course in ARCGIS
at Guyana Sea Defences by Rajkumar Singh
(Environmental Protection Agency): 24
- 28 May 2004.
Display feature and tabular data, Work with
geo-referenced spatial data,
Query features using logical expressions, Find features using spatial
relationships,
Edit spatial and attribute data, Associate tables with joins and relates,
Produce maps, reports and graphs.
- Global Tech Computer
Course in Excel, Access and Visual Basic: May, June, July
- Advanced GIS Training
at Guyana Sea Defences by Ruben Vargas Franco (ITC), June 2004
Perform spatial analysis,
Manage geographic data, Perform
geo-coding,
Automate data through heads-up digitizing, Convert data from
other formats,
Edit spatial and attribute data, Create and use metadata,
Produce high-quality maps and reports.
- Advanced GIS
Training at Guyana Sea Defences by Koert Sijmons (ITC), June 2004

Michiel Damen (ITC), September 2004.
Database Management
Over the course of last months several training workshops were given to the
Module 2 Team:
- Hands on Training Sea Defense “4SHORE” Application
Training in the developed application, automated data importing, manual data
entry, analysis, reporting by Mr. Ries Kluskens. This training has been given
to the Modules 1, 2 and 4.
In February 2005, Mr. Jurryt Zwerver (Royal Haskoning) gave a training to
create maps for web publishing with MapLogics. The results of this work will
be part of the 4SHORE-web system that will allow access to the data and maps
collected under the present project via the internet.
Futhermore, the software for the 4SHORE-database system was completed and is
fully operational. As part of this system Mr. Ries Kluskens and Ms. Cathelijne
van Haselen (Royal Haskoning) has provided training in February and March 2005
on the use of this system and entering data.
- Database and Application development
Database design, Data models, Application design, Database management,
Database System Administration.
Final training
session
- Mr. Ruben Vargas provided a training /
Refresher
course to the GIS team in February 2005. Everything that the team has been learning over the last year was
put into practise. New elements included Geo-referencing and stacking layers
using Erdas software and Spatial Data Analysis.
Trip to the Environmental Protection Agency
During a trip to EPA the team learned how
- EPA's Network is configured;
- the operation of EPA's GIS network is working.
Practical work
Over the course of last months the Module 2 Team did the following practical
work:
- Use of handheld GPS
- Rubber sheeting 1: 50,000 Maptiles
- Entering the 1996 - 1997 conditional survey data inn
the SDMIS database
- Georeferencing Aerial Photographs of Guyana's Coastline
for the time periods 1950, 1970, 1979 - 1980 and 1983.
