Training Module 1 - Surveys

Introduction

The first workshop has been held on 29 January 2004 at Guyana Sea Defences at Water Street in Georgetown. The project activities Module 1, Surveys comprise:

• Bathymetric surveying
• Levelling
• Measuring of wind, wave, tides and currents
• Sediment sampling
• Water quality and salinity sampling

The most important training activities are:

• On-the-job training of trainees from Sea and River Defence Division, Marine Administration (Marad), Hydromet, Guyana Lands & Surveys, National Drainage & Irrigation Board and Guyana Forestry Commission.
• This includes handling and maintaining equipment, operation and maintenance of survey vessels, and approach and methodology of the measurements.
• A series of workshops to deal with the theoretical background of the measurements
• Transfer of equipment and the associated documents
• Preparation of guidelines and manuals where appropriate
• Final report with lessons learned and recommendations on operational and institutional issues to ensure continuity

The Theoretical & Technical Manual consist of:

• Co-ordinate Systems and Map Projections
• Levelling surveys
• Global Positioning System (GPS)
• Echo sounding
• Waves and Currents
• Hydro Meteorological instruments

The Operational Manual consist of:

• Data Aquisition methods
• Quality Control and Quality Assurance
• Safety Measures & Emergency Measures
• Data Processing and Dta Storage

The Planning and Managemnt Manual consist of:

• Planning of Survey activities
• Budgetting of Survey activities
• Establishment of Survey department
• Institutional setting withing sea defence organisation

The on-the-job Training report consist of:

• Team composition
• On the job training activities

Lectures
Aiming at Modules 1 (Survey), 3 (Modelling) and 4 (Sea Defence Structures)
a set of lectures have been given by Mr. Chris Persaud (SRKN'gineering)
providing an introduction in hydraulics. See website for more information. 

Aiming at Module 1, Survey and Data Collection, Leslie gave a lecture on various theoretical and practical aspects of hydrographic surveys. Furthermore he paid specific attention to his many years of experience in this field. See website for more information.
